Jul 15,2021 | Joycenamenecklace

When you're glancing over your jewelry collection, would you find that some necklaces obviously have been leaving there and getting dust for many years but actually they're the good-looking and even gorgeous one?  One of the biggest reasons for this awkward situation rooting from the length of the necklace that is not suitable for you at all. It's crucial to consider the length of the chain before picking up a necklace.

So What kind of standards could we use as the reference when choosing an dreamy necklace? We have come up with three standards for your reference.

Based on the style of your wardrobe

Your everyday wardrobe is an essential part of your necklace length decision. Let’s take turtlenecks as a wardrobe example. Long ropes of chain or beads will look great with turtlenecks on most women, but they would loose effect if you are short or full-figured. Once you have decided your wearing, just ensure the necklace length you choose fits into to the overall look and improves your outfit.

Here are some suggestions for different scenarios or cloth styles
  • 14 inches collar choker is tightly around the neck, worn best with open-neck clothing such as scoop necks, V-necks, off-the-shoulder and boatnecks.
  • 16 inches choker is tightly against base of throat, fitting into all kinds of outfit.
  • 18 inches princess-styled necklace would be placed on the collarbone, matching well with all kinds of outfits as well.
  • 20 to 24 inches Matinee-styled necklace hanging between the collarbone and the bust would be great for both business and casual wear.
  • 28 to 36 inches Opera-styled necklace placing on the bust or an inch or two below is highly recommended for high necklines and evening wear.
  • 36 to 42 inches Ropes & Lariats wrapped to sit on or just below the center of the bust, perfectly worn with elegant business and evening wear.

Based on the length and width of your Neck and Body

A choker would easily catch eyeball on a long, thin neck (AKA “swan neck”). To emphasize a long, graceful neck, choose a shorter chain measuring between 14 and 18 inches (35 and 45 cm).Collar and choker necklaces are wonderful options because they could draw the viewer's straight to your neck. A choker on a short neck could make that neck look stumpy and possibly wider than it is. A wide & short neck is better to avoid wearing a choker, specifically a wide one. Instead, choose a necklace 20- to 24-inches long because this could visually stretch out the neck and turn it to be more swan-like. Wrinkled necks is better to stay away from short & tight necklaces as well. They're more likely to draw others' attention to those wrinkles .Instead, a longer necklace with a stunning pendant could easily make a distraction away from the neck.

Another important factor you may have to consider about when picking up a necklace is your height. Those who are in average height (between 5’4” and 5’7”) and taller frame (5’7” or 170 cm and higher) can easily pull off any length necklace (Although if you’re taller, it have a great chance that your flattering height frame would not be highlighted with short necklace). However, Petite lady may be overwhelmed by long necklaces and chunky designs. If you’re 5’4” (162 cm) or below , it would be more ideal to choose 16 to 20 inch (40 to 60 cm) necklace.

Based on the shape of your face

Square

Square face are featured in angular jawline, straight sides, equal-width forehead, cheekbones and jaw. In other words, square face is nearly as wide as it is long. Ratio is close to 1:1. Longer necklaces are always be your first choice.

Round

Cheekbones is the widest part of your face. The forehead and jawline are rounded and the chin is short. Face is almost as wide as it is long. Ratio is usually between 1:1 and 1:1.5. Longer necklace is suitable, such as the matinee length ,long pendant and long T styles. You can pull off collar length necklaces as well. However, try to avoid the chokers and very chunky short necklace because it would accentuate your roundness.

Oval

Face Length is around 50% longer than the width of cheekbones, with forehead slightly narrower and jaw line narrower and curved. Ratio of width to length is about 1:1.5. Literally you could pull off all kinds of necklace.

Heart

A heart shaped face is characterized by a narrow forehead and a narrow chin, that are about the same width. The cheekbones are the widest point of the face, and the chin is often pointy. Choker, collar, or short length necklaces work best for this facial type. Whist be careful about long necklace because it would lead to the emphasis of a “V” down your chest.
